Part Four: Satanism in my Front Yard...

My new neighbor across the street grew up a Satanist. I know, it sounds a little over dramatic, doesn’t it? Makes me think of all my friends back in high school who worshiped Marilyn Manson and wore black lipstick.

Not my neighbor, though. His name is Dave and I think he’s a pretty cool guy... but I should clarify: he’s not a Satanist anymore.

Yet again, Mr. Walker, another poignant story. Thanks for sharing it. And thanks for being aware of the ways we can love people that aren't complicated and that God honours. You are deeply loved by Him and He is so proud of you.

Thanks, Pete, for adding another post to your blog. I appreciate your insights and your writing style: very,...er...relational, I guess you could say. Relationships are the key to being human. We take our cue from God, Whom in His Unity is yet a Society. If One's essence is Love, then One must needs have those One can love.... Thus the One God is Father, Son and Spirit. God's nature leads to the inevitable creation of all that now is and will be (and has been). Ya gotta have something to love. Your post shows that you've been taking pointers from Jesus: loving your neighbor.

I've never had a Satanist as a neighbor, or ever needed to worry about them, but I'll bet it was an eyeopener, and perhaps discomforting to hear about it for the first time.... My neighbor is a former Baptist minister/preacher and he toes a fairly fundamentalistic line, however we don't have any things to argue about since I usually just listen and don't try to split hairs or rock the boat. At times it's important to rock the boat and question assumptions, etc.. but when your neighbor is just sharing (and isn't trying to put anyone down) I listen...

Wow, what an interesting story. I was just putting off writing a term paper and flipping through blogs and saw this. That was in March. Have you talked to Dave since? You're a good writer, keep it up.
Are you close to Imago Dei in Corvallis? I don't know if that's close to Portland.

Hi Meagan,
I've looked over your posts briefly and especially appreciated your lament on the elections. It's hard to be a Christian who doesn't blindly subscribe to a conservative doctrine, isn't it? Anyway, that's another story!

I have talked with Dave several times in the last couple of months. He and his wife are talking about divorce, so he's been lamenting the state of his life right now and wondering how to take care of his kids. It's a tough time, so I try to be a sympathetic ear when I can. It's funny though (funny?) that every time we speak, he uncovers another sordid detail of his past. I think I must give off a confessional vibe or something. A few days ago, he told me when he was seven he burned down his aunts house because she beat him.

Yikes! I don't know if EVERYTHING he tells me is true or not. I tend to be overly trusting. But what is certain: Dave needs a savior.

I'm praying for him, hoping God will show me how to be a friend. It's definitely not comfortable: what a weird little man he is!

Yes, Corvallis is about an hour and a half from Portland, and I've been to Imago Dei several times! I really like the kind of church Rick is building there. In some ways it's still a little bit fundamentalist in its teaching (at least for me) but the church is reaching people who might never be touched by a traditional church. That says something powerful! People aren't necessarily attracted or repelled by theology or doctrine - they just want to be part of a family. Rick does a great job with that!

Once again, your words provoke thought in my own head.
